Survivor - Questions

  1. How did your group make decisions when the candidates had to be ranked. Give a specific example.
  2. Who influenced the decisions in your group? How did he/she do this?
  3. How was conflict managed in your group? What conflict styles were used?
  4. Rate out of 10 your overall satisfaction with your group's decision on who should be allowed to stay in the Biosphere, with 10 being extremely satisfied and 1 being not satisfied at all. Give an explanation for why you chose this rating.

Conflict Resolution - Day 1

You will need today's handout (Conflict Resolution Day 1 booklet) in order to complete this logbook entry.

Please complete the following. All answers can be put into a logbook entry and then sent to me by the end of the class.

  1. Read the Assumptions page in the booklet.
    • Give an example of an assumption you or another person made that led to a misunderstanding. You must have been involved in the situation. When you describe the assumption, you must include a description of the intent, action and effect. Your answer must be at least four sentences.
  2. Complete the conflict style questionnaire in the booklet. 
    • What is your conflict style(s) according to this questionnaire?
    • Do you agree with the results of this questionnaire? Why or why not?
  3. Give an example of a conflict you have encountered in the past. 
    • Describe in detail what the conflict was about and your role in it. 
    • What conflict style did you use? Give evidence that you used that particular conflict style.
    • Was the conflict resolved?

Management Styles

Quiz on Thursday! One question will involve outlining The Cave hierarchy of management. The rest of the questions will be based on the management assignment.

In your textbook, three management styles are given: power-oriented, routine-oriented and achievement oriented.

  • Power-Oriented: Manager maintains control over the whole operation.
  • Routine-Oriented: Manager focuses on keeping the operation running smoothly, not on growth/ advancement.
  • Achievement-Oriented: Manager is open to new ideas and seeks out employee suggestions.

Management

Today we will be looking at what is involved with managing a business. You will be quizzed on this material next week so make sure to keep all of your work for studying.

As a class, we will be discussing the different levels of management and will be creating a management pyramid for The Cave.
  • Top Management - Top management is made up of senior-level executives of an organization, or those positions that hold the most responsibility. These top managers are responsible for setting the overall direction of a company and making sure that major organizational objectives are achieved.
  • Middle Management - This level of managers report to top management and serve as the head of major departments and their specialized units. Middle managers serve as a liaison between top managers and the rest of the organization from a very unique standpoint. Middle managers essentially have the important role of designing, selecting, and carrying out the best plan possible as a means of propelling a company towards its overall goals.
  • Low Management - Low-level managers work most closely with the greater workforce and hold a much more interpersonal role than any of the other levels of management. These managers work to ensure that individual employees are meeting their performance goals in a way that aligns with the organizational goals, such as completing a set number of projects by a specific deadline or selling a set number of products within a certain period of time.

Today's Assignment:

Read chapter 14 from Entrepreneurship & Small Business Management (the green textbook), pages 306 to 318.


1. Identify and explain the management functions.

2. List and explain the key elements in a positive business climate.

3. Name and then define the three basic management styles.

4. List the skills needed for managing.

5. Why is it important to link the goals of the individual to the goals of the team?

6. How can the principles of management excellence help a business meet its goals?

7. Describe the ideal General Manager for The Cave. Your answer should be at least one paragraph (5-8 sentences) and should include at least five key terms from chapter 14. The Key Terms are located on page 318 under Key Terms Review.
*Along with the five key terms, choose one of the four management styles listed below that would best be suited to the general manager of The Cave. Provide an explanation as to why you choose that management style.


Case Study:
You are the owner and manager of a retail store. One of your sales clerks is regularly late to work and often does not show up at all. Yet her monthly sales volume is two to three times higher than that of the other salespeople. You do not want to fire this employee, but you need her to be at work every day on time.

Use the above case study to answer questions to answer questions #8 to #10.

8. What management style would work best in this situation and why.

9. What management skills would you use when approaching this situation and why.

10. You will need to have a conversation with this employee. List three things that you would say to her. Keep in mind that she brings in a large profit so you don’t want to lose her as an employee.

The Hiring Process - Day 3

Mock Interviews Today!

In your pairs, you will take turns being the interviewer. When you are interviewing your partner, make sure you take notes on their responses. You will need to hand in this note sheet at the end of class. I am not expecting perfect spelling and grammar on these note sheets.

Once you have completed your mock interview (as both the interviewer and the interviewee) you need to write a small report on the following:

1. Your Role as the Interviewer
  • In one paragraph ( 5-8 sentences), explain whether or not you would hire the person you interviewed. You must provide proof (from the interview notes) to support your decision. Be as detailed as possible.
  • Give one example of something the interviewee did well (1 sentence).
  • Give one example of something the interviewee could improve upon (1 sentence).
2. Your Role as the Interviewee
  • Describe to me what you did well in the interview (2 sentences or less). 
  • Describe to me what you could have improved upon (2 sentences or less).
3. Email in a logbook entry showing that you have completed today’s tasks.
  • Do NOT attach a word document to your logbook email. Just copy/paste the text into the email.
4. Hand in your interview note sheet to Ms. McGill.

The Hiring Process - Day 2

If you have not already finished the Day 1 tasks, you must do so before proceeding to the Day 2 tasks.

Tasks for today:

1. Using the interview questions you created last day, create an interview note taking sheet.
  • Create a new word document and copy/paste the interview questions you wrote last day into it.
  • Format the word document to look like the picture below. The picture only has three questions shown, but you will need to have ten questions.
  • Make sure to leave enough space after each question so you will be able to write notes.
  • Once you are done, print the word document to C171 and pick it up from the printer. 
  • Do not lose these pieces of paper as you will need them next day for the mock interview.


2. Answer your own interview questions.
  • Make yourself sound as appealing as possible.
  • Use examples from your own life.
  • Be detailed! For questions that require longer answers, try to write at least 3 sentences.

3. At the end of an interview, the interviewee is usually given the chance to ask their potential employer some questions about the job they are applying for. If you were applying to work at The Cave, list two questions that you would ask the interviewer.

4. Email in a logbook entry showing that you have completed today’s tasks.
  • This includes the answers to your own interview questions and the two questions you created to ask the interviewer.
  • Do NOT attach the word documents to your logbook email. Just copy/paste the text into the email.

The Hiring Process - Day 1

Over the next three classes we will be looking at how the hiring process works in a small business such as The Cave. We will be looking at what kind of employee The Cave needs, how to advertise that The Cave is hiring, and creating interview questions and taking part in a mock interview.

On Friday we will be having the mock interviews. You will be paired with another person in the class and will interview each other. The interviews will take no longer than 20 minutes each. More details will be given next class.

All of the assignments  this week are to be done individually. It is possible to complete all your work in class but if you are unable to, it is your responsibility to finish it as homework.

If you have not completed a logbook entry for the staff meeting, please see the previous blog post and complete it before the end of class.

Please keep all of your work in a word document. You will be needing it for the next two classes.

Tasks for today:
  1. Create a list of five attributes a Cave employee should have. 
    • For each attribute, provide an explanation as to why that attribute is important. The explanation should be at least two sentences.
    • For Example: Angry – Customers are only happy when the person serving them is extremely angry. This guarantees that the customer will return because they will want to confront the angry server.
  2. Create a daily service announcement (DSA) for the GWG morning announcements to advertise that The Cave is hiring. 
    • The announcement should be less than four sentences. 
    • You need to include one sentence indicating that interested students should see Ms. Cho for an application form. 
    • Try to make the job sound as appealing as possible.
  3. Create a list of ten interview questions that you see as being well suited to finding an appropriate employee for The Cave. 
    • There are a lot of great resources online that can help you with this. 
    • Make sure that the questions will determine if the person has the five attributes you listed in the first task. 
    • Try to avoid yes/no questions. Instead look for questions that are open ended and require the person being interviewed to talk a bit.
  4. Email the above completed tasks to Ms.McGill. This will be your logbook entry for today.
    • Do NOT attach the word document to your email. Just copy and paste what you have completed directly into the email.

Staff Meeting Logbook Entry

For the staff meeting last Thursday, you need to complete a logbook entry.
o  Subject Line: 2013 Oct 3 @A_Firstname
o  Include a description of everything you did to contribute towards your department's staff meeting presentation.
o  Give yourself a mark out of 5 based on your contribution to your department and how well you think you did.
§  Giving yourself a mark of 5/5 means that you: used your free time wisely during the last three classes (completing tasks set out my the department leader or researching what your department is in charge of), contributed a large portion of the work completed by your department, spoke during the presentation and were respectful of other class members when they were presenting.
